Summary:

This novel is set in Harlem, New York where a young boy named Lolly resides in a public housing project called Saint Nicholas. Lolly is left reeling after the death of his older brother, Jeremiah, and lonely as his family is unable to cope with the loss. Jeremiah and Lolly had an argument previous to his passing in a gang-related shooting, which places guilt on Lolly.

Lolly goes to an after-school program to help him deal with his grief and begins building a Lego world called Harmonee. In creating this, he meets an autistic girl named Rose who is also in the group after her mother’s suicide.

Harmonee gets attention when it is featured on the news, but Lolly is beaten up on his way home. His friend, Vega, who was also beaten up, is contemplating whether he wants to join a gang to get back at those who attacked him. Both Lolly and Vega decide not to in an attempt to not go down the same path that Jeremiah did.

How the Book Relates to the Modern World

This book relates to the Modern World because it brings awareness to different struggles experienced by gang-crime-related victims.

Lolly and his family are left in despair after the death of Jeremiah, but Lolly chooses the path that gets him back on track.

Why The Book Should be Read in Schools

This book should be read in schools because it will expose students to how they can overcome their adversities.

Rating

I would rate this book an 8/10. The Stars Beneath Our Feet is a good read and teaches a lot about overcoming challenges.
