Audre Lorde, self-proclaimed “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” was an incredible writer and an even more powerful activist. Born in 1934, Lorde began writing poetry in eighth grade. She dedicated her life to condemning injustices such as racism, homophobia, classism, and sexism. Her writing is incredibly emotional and empowering and is shown in her rage, sadness, frustration, and elation which is deeply rooted in her works. She often spoke at colleges and conventions with her heart and soul. Unfortunately, she passed away in 1992 from breast cancer, which she had been battling for years.
Lorde spent most of her life lecturing at different universities and founding organizations that empowered colored and queer women of America. In continuation, she played a large influential role in the Afro-German movement. Also known as the Berlin Years, she spent time at a university in Berlin and helped the Black movement in Germany rise. Many of the women there looked to her as a mentor. Her work there influenced movements in spreading awareness over intersectionality across racial lines.
Outside of her activist career, Lorde shined even brighter through her writing. The Selected Works of Audre Lorde includes some of her best works. Such as the Cancer Journals, A Burst of Light, The Erotic as Power, and more. Her works are so powerful and thought-provoking that they guarantee to give anyone something to think about.
It does cover many mature topics so it should only be recommended to those who are older or have mature minds.
