Information

Author: Rupi Kaur / Genre: Poetry / Published: 2014

Summary

Written in short poems split into sections titled The hurting, The loving, and The breaking, the author expresses her past from her traumatic childhood to her displacement in her family.

Each section of the book shows her life progression and the development she experiences. Early in life, she was taught that women were used as objects in the interest of men. She had been afraid of older men and was forced to keep quiet about her issues and not speak out. She developed trust issues with her father and every man in her life and didn’t understand what safety and love meant.

In the author’s premature and loving childhood, she has fond memories of her mother being pregnant and her father telling her that women are the closest thing to God. In a warm environment, the author wonders about the loving behaviors of mothers and how they are so kind in a world filled with oppression and hatred. In her early adulthood, the author finds self-love by loving her lover and gains peace and confidence.

Despite growing up with a loving mother, the rest of Kaur’s family is toxic and misogynistic. Kaur often feels betrayed, isolated, and depressed when she can’t find her own voice. She talks about rape, parental neglect, societal standards on females, mental health, and depression. Kaur also spreads awareness on feminism, mental health, and self-love while being in a destructive family.

Rating

The book overall was an easy, quick read with short yet deep poems. The book cover was aesthetic and simple-minded. Very relatable and powerful, Kaur knows how to draw you in with her words and make you read from beginning to end.
